Ash Hollow

Wednesday, 3 July 2013

After going out for breakfast, we said our good-byes and headed for Colby, Kansas, where Marian lives, and Charles and his family. We were not in a big hurry, stopped several times to read historic markers and see the sights.

The best stop of the day was at Ash Hollow, along the North Platte river. Visitor center open only on weekends, so we just walked around outdoors. It would be interesting enough from a historical perspective, but what really made it special was the dam, holding back a pond, fed by a spring, in which resided a large collection of frogpoles.

The biggest tadpole I ever saw, and then when I look more carefully, it’s actually not a tadpole, not any more.

Has to be considered a frogpole, right?

The patriarch, as Jacky considers him.

And this definitely looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.

Getting late in the day by the time we reached Colby. Didn’t know where the motel strip was, but we followed a local police car until the driver stopped, and got directions from her.

Good to see Marian and Charles, after quite a number of years, and to meet Kat, Camille and Yvonne for the first time.
